Prague Studios is making a bold move to enhance its offerings with a major expansion project worth $10.8 million (CZK 250 million), aiming to transform an existing hall in the Letňany neighborhood into four cutting-edge film studios. Founder Tomáš Krejčí recently shared insights about this expansion, which is set to further position Prague as a leading hub for high-end international productions.

As demand for studio space in the Czech Republic continues to grow—fueled by global productions like Amazon Studios’ Blade Runner 2099 at Barrandov Studio—Prague Studios is stepping up with state-of-the-art technology, including massive video walls that digitally recreate global locations. This tech will be a game-changer for filmmakers looking to reduce the substantial costs associated with location shoots.

“Each studio will be about 27,000 square feet (2,500 square meters),” Krejčí explained. “We’re integrating advanced technology that allows actors to perform in front of expansive monitors showing dynamic backgrounds. This approach allows productions to simulate any location in the world without the need for travel, significantly lowering production expenses.”

Expansion Driven by Virtual Production

The expansion is tailored to meet the growing demand for high-end television and film production, where virtual sets and CGI are becoming the standard. Krejčí emphasized that the studios will focus on creating an environment where technical staff and crews can collaborate seamlessly.

“It’s critical that all aspects of production work closely together to respond to real-time needs of directors and cinematographers,” Krejčí noted. “With the global rise in labor costs, particularly in the U.S., it’s becoming increasingly expensive to shoot there. Our goal is to attract international productions by offering world-class services at more competitive prices.”

This expansion positions Prague Studios as a cost-effective alternative to U.S. production centers, which have seen rising labor costs. While global film revenues dipped in 2023, the Czech Republic continues to stand out for its production incentives and affordable skilled labor, keeping it an attractive destination for Hollywood productions.

Strengthening International Ties

Prague Studios has already established itself as a top choice for global projects, hosting productions such as Apple TV+’s Foundation (seasons two and three), with discussions for a fourth season currently underway. This expansion aligns with broader efforts in the Czech Republic to create a stronger framework for the film and TV industry.

Krejčí highlighted that “we are in the final stages of negotiating new audiovisual legislation,” made possible by strong collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Czech Film Commission, and the Czech Film Office. “The goal is to create conditions that will keep the Czech Republic competitive in the film industry for years to come.”

A Bold Future for Prague Studios

Construction on the new facilities is scheduled to begin in March or April of next year, with a target completion date in 2025. Once finished, the 215,000 square-foot (20,000 square-meter) expansion will provide the capacity to handle larger, more complex projects, solidifying Prague’s position as a top destination for international productions in Central Europe.

By offering advanced technology and more affordable production services, Prague Studios is set to further strengthen the Czech Republic’s reputation as a global film production hub. As more streaming services and Hollywood studios seek innovative, cost-effective production solutions, Prague is well-positioned to meet the growing demand.
