The Indie Film Hub marks a significant move for Pinewood, which has been a global leader in large-scale soundstage and production services. By opening its doors to independent filmmakers, Pinewood is not only widening its client base but also responding to the growing demand for high-quality, cost-effective production facilities. Filmmakers using the hub will have access to a wide range of services, including camera hire, drone photography, and post-production. In addition, the “Prep Den” will allow filmmakers to develop their projects on-site before securing final approval.
This shift comes as Pinewood prepares to close its TV department in 2025, a decision that has caused concern within the industry. While it remains unclear if the Indie Film Hub will take over the TV department’s facilities, the focus on supporting indie film production is a clear pivot for Pinewood as it continues to position itself as a leader in the global soundstage market.
At the launch, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised the new hub, stating: “Pinewood’s new state-of-the-art facility will be a huge boost for the UK’s indie filmmakers, offering first-rate infrastructure and on-site expertise to bring more British productions to the big screen.” She emphasized how the hub, combined with the new tax relief, would drive economic growth and strengthen the UK’s position in the competitive global market.
David Conway, CEO of Pinewood Group, highlighted the importance of this initiative in keeping Pinewood at the forefront of the UK’s production industry. “UK film production is at the heart of Pinewood and Shepperton Studios’ DNA, and our aim with the new Pinewood Indie Film Hub is to further catalyse the independent film sector in the UK, boosting creativity and attracting further investment.”
By broadening its scope to include independent projects, Pinewood is ensuring that its infrastructure serves all tiers of filmmaking, from blockbuster productions to smaller indie films. As global demand for soundstage space continues to rise, Pinewood’s initiative will help meet the industry’s growing needs while reinforcing the UK’s reputation as a world leader in film production.
Ben Roberts, BFI chief executive, also commended the move, stating: “Pinewood’s new studio space and access to high-level production facilities… will further bolster the UK’s global reputation for making great home-grown films.”
With Buckinghamshire being a hub for film production, Cllr Martin Tett added, “Pinewood’s new independent film hub will bring more productions to our wealth of unique locations across our county.”
As the global production industry continues to expand, Pinewood’s Indie Film Hub is poised to play a crucial role in supporting a new wave of independent filmmakers, further solidifying the studio’s influence both in the UK and on the world stage.
