A new chapter in New Zealand’s film and television industry begins with the opening of Remarkable Studios NZ in Queenstown, spearheaded by Screentime New Zealand. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, used in iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, Queenstown is now home to its first dedicated studio facility. This new space—converted from a former department store—aims to establish Queenstown as a full-scale production hub rather than a secondary location for scenic shoots.
Screentime New Zealand CEO Philly de Lacey, the driving force behind the project, explained that the demand for such a facility has been mounting for years. “It’s been a long-standing challenge for Queenstown to offer indoor filming options or weather cover for crews,” said de Lacey. “When the department store lease came up, we jumped at the chance to transform it into a state-of-the-art studio.”
The new 24,750 square foot studio is fully soundproofed and features office space, construction areas, and a loading bay, making it a comprehensive production facility. Conveniently located just five minutes from Queenstown Airport and surrounded by hotels, Remarkable Studios is set to accommodate large-scale productions. Banijay, one of the world’s largest production and distribution companies, was the first to use the facility, shooting their drama series A Remarkable Place to Die.
Boosting Queenstown’s Role in Film Production
The arrival of Remarkable Studios NZ marks a significant step for Queenstown, which has long played second fiddle to larger New Zealand production centers like Auckland and Wellington. Queenstown Lakes District Council Mayor Glyn Lewers said the new studio will be a “major boost” for the area. “We’ve always been known for our cinematic alpine locations and skilled crew base, but now we’re offering a dedicated facility that will unlock more opportunities for the local industry,” said Lewers.
Remarkable Studios NZ is expected to attract more international productions, especially as global production costs rise. Banijay CEO Marco Bassetti and Chief Business Officer Fred Balmary praised the project, noting its perfect timing: “In an era where producers are seeking more economical solutions, Queenstown now offers both stunning locations and a fully functional production complex.”
New Zealand’s Growing Appeal to Global Productions
The timing of Remarkable Studios NZ’s launch couldn’t be better. New Zealand has long been a prime filming destination, and the addition of this facility in Queenstown enhances its appeal. The country’s combination of natural beauty, competitive tax incentives, and robust infrastructure has made it increasingly attractive to international projects.
“There’s a lot of momentum for New Zealand right now,” de Lacey remarked. “We’re seeing more international dramas and co-productions returning post-COVID, and it’s the perfect time for us to invest in the region.”
As Remarkable Studios NZ officially opens, Queenstown is poised to compete with New Zealand’s larger production hubs, offering filmmakers a blend of breathtaking scenery and top-tier facilities. This move solidifies New Zealand’s status as a leading destination for global film and television productions, and Queenstown is set to play a key role in this growth.
