StageRunner is thrilled to spotlight the recent completion of Gran Canaria Studios, a new facility that is set to become one of the largest virtual production stages in Europe. This new state-of-the-art studio offers unparalleled opportunities for both independent filmmakers and major international productions looking to take advantage of Gran Canaria’s competitive film location incentives.
Located on the 12,916 square foot Stage 1 of the Gran Canaria Platos studio lot, this cutting-edge virtual production stage was designed by industry leaders ARRI Solutions, Video Cine Import (VCI), and ROE Visual, renowned for their premium LED technology. The project, commissioned by the Economic Promotion Agency of Gran Canaria (SPEGC), is designed to attract high-end productions and further solidify Gran Canaria’s reputation as a prime destination for film and television.
A New Hub for Global Productions
“The film industry is a crucial economic driver for our region, and we’re fully committed to its growth,” said Cosme García Falcón, Managing Director of SPEGC. “Gran Canaria is leading the charge to become a top hub for global TV and film production. By developing this virtual stage, we’re providing content creators from around the world with cutting-edge facilities and world-class technical services, positioning the island and Spain as one of the best-prepared and most profitable locations for audiovisual productions.”
Next-Generation Technology Meets Unparalleled Flexibility
ARRI Solutions, in collaboration with VCI and ROE Visual, delivered an advanced system that blends cutting-edge technology with flexible design. The studio features a unique fixed curved LED wall—131 feet wide and 26 feet high—paired with adjustable elements that allow productions to reconfigure the space to fit a wide variety of needs.
The volume includes two adjustable ceilings—968 square feet and 484 square feet—both suspended from variable-speed motors, which allow for height and tilt changes. Additionally, two mobile LED walls or “side wings” can be added for enhanced flexibility. These elements make it possible for productions to seamlessly transition between physical sets and virtual environments, maximizing the studio’s utility for a wide range of projects.
All of this cutting-edge tech is built on ROE Visual Black Pearl BP2V2 LED panels, known for delivering high-contrast, high-resolution visuals ideal for in-camera use in virtual production and XR applications. The precision and quality of these panels are key to creating stunning, immersive environments that meet the demands of modern filmmakers.
A Collaborative Effort
“We’re incredibly proud to have led the technical realization of this flagship project,” said Kevin Schwutke, Senior Vice President at ARRI Group. “Gran Canaria has a rich history of attracting major productions, and now, with this studio, filmmakers have access to next-generation technologies that provide both flexibility and efficiency. This facility will play a pivotal role in elevating the region’s production infrastructure.”
The collaboration between ARRI, VCI, and ROE Visual has resulted in a studio that not only meets the highest industry standards but also pushes the boundaries of what virtual production can achieve in Europe. Olaf Sperwer, Business Development Manager at ROE Visual, echoed these sentiments: “We are proud to have been part of this transformative project, and we’re confident that Gran Canaria Studios will quickly become a go-to destination for premium international productions.”
Setting a New Benchmark for Virtual Production in Spain
This virtual production studio isn’t just the largest in Spain—it’s setting a new benchmark for what’s possible in European filmmaking. Fernando Baselga, CEO of VCI, highlighted the significance of the project: “This collaboration with ARRI and ROE has delivered one of Europe’s most advanced virtual production studios, creating a comprehensive digital ecosystem that includes not only cutting-edge technology but also skilled professionals ready to tackle the demands of modern content creation.”
With the completion of this facility, Gran Canaria is positioning itself at the forefront of the global film industry, offering filmmakers a unique combination of high-tech infrastructure and stunning, versatile locations. Whether you’re producing a big-budget feature or an innovative independent film, Gran Canaria Studios provides everything you need to bring your vision to life.
