EFD Studios, a leader in advanced tech rentals, is making waves with the announcement of its latest expansion: the largest virtual set in Europe. This state-of-the-art facility will be located just outside Madrid, in Boadilla del Monte, and is expected to transform the landscape of virtual production in Europe.
The set will cover an impressive 2,000 square meters (21,500 square feet) and will be equipped with cutting-edge LED technology and a top-tier computer and processing chain. The facility, scheduled to begin operations by the second quarter of 2025, will take up nearly half of the EFD Studios headquarters in Spain, which is undergoing renovations to meet the specific needs of this ambitious project.
A World-Class LED Volume Set for International Productions
What sets this virtual set apart is not only its scale but also its permanency. While LED screens are often transportable, EFD Studios is committed to creating a “world-class LED volume” that will serve as a permanent fixture in the European production landscape. According to EFD Studios CEO, Georgina Terán, the facility will cater to both local productions and large-scale international projects from major studios, many of which are already clients of EFD.
A Growing Presence in Europe and Beyond
EFD Studios has already established itself as a go-to rental company across Mexico, Colombia, the U.S., and Spain. Recent high-profile projects include Disney+’s La Maquina, starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, and Netflix’s Pedro Páramo, directed by Rodrigo Prieto. For both projects, EFD Studios supplied an array of technical equipment, from Alexa 35 cameras with Hawk V-Lite lenses to SkyPanels and ARRI’s M-series lights.
Expanding into virtual production is a natural progression for the company, which places technological innovation at the core of its value proposition. Terán emphasized EFD’s commitment to sustainability, noting that virtual production aligns with their mission to create a more eco-friendly industry. The company’s investments in technology are not just about keeping up with trends but about driving meaningful change in how content is created.
Developing Local Talent with Circa 24 and EFD Studios Academy
To further support industry growth, EFD Studios is also launching two new initiatives aimed at developing top-tier talent in both Spain and Mexico.
Circa 24, a partnership with renowned Mexican producer Inna Payán (La Jaula de Oro), will focus on training emerging filmmakers in Mexico. The program will provide a comprehensive approach to education, blending creative and technical training, and offering participants both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice.
In Spain, the EFD Studios Academy will provide advanced technical training for both new and experienced professionals. The Academy’s goal is to meet the increasing regional demand for skilled workers by equipping trainees with practical, high-demand skills in the rapidly evolving field of virtual production.
A Game-Changer for Virtual Production in Europe
EFD Studios’ latest venture solidifies its role as a technological leader in the global film and TV industry. With its largest virtual set yet, this expansion into virtual production is poised to not only attract international productions but also foster local talent, creating a sustainable and innovative future for the audiovisual sector.
