In a significant boost to Detroit’s burgeoning film industry, a collective of 13 local filmmakers has unveiled The Collective Studios in Southfield, Michigan. This nearly 12,000-square-foot facility offers an array of meticulously designed sets, including a restaurant, church, hospital, courtroom, and even an airport terminal with a plane interior. The grand opening is scheduled for February 1, 2025, at 4:00 PM, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony, studio tours, and networking opportunities.
The studio is the brainchild of Mike Jeffers, a seasoned Detroiter with over 15 years in the local film scene, known for directing Tubi films like “Chocolate Kiss” and “Rotten.” Collaborating with 12 other metro Detroit filmmakers, including Janaya Black, Tonja Ayers, Richard Bass, and Marshalle Favors, the team has self-funded this venture without external sponsors or crowdfunding. Their shared vision is to provide a versatile space not only for filmmakers but also for photographers, content creators, advertisers, and marketers.
The establishment of The Collective Studios comes at a pivotal time for Detroit’s independent film industry, which has seen a resurgence with productions like “Gun Play” and “I Love You Forever” gaining traction. Despite the challenges posed by the elimination of Michigan’s film tax credit in 2015, local talent has stepped up, with many Black creators leading the charge both in front of and behind the camera. The studio aims to alleviate common logistical hurdles by offering ready-made sets, reducing the need for filmmakers to seek locations outside the city.
Beyond providing production spaces, The Collective Studios plans to host filmmaking classes, fostering education and collaboration within the community. The founders are optimistic about the growth of Detroit’s film scene, noting increased national recognition and interest. As co-founder Richard Bass remarked, “We’re making some noise here… Motown had its era, the Motor City had its era. Now we’re doing something new in this era.”
The launch of The Collective Studios signifies a new chapter for Detroit’s creative community, offering a state-of-the-art facility that caters to a wide range of production needs and solidifying the city’s status as a rising hub for independent filmmaking.
