Buffalo’s screen industry just marked a major milestone. Great Point Studios, the $50 million purpose-built facility on Niagara Street, is officially open for business—and making headlines. Actor and producer Mario Lopez has wrapped filming on a new holiday-themed movie for Great American Media, the first full-length feature shot entirely at the studio since its doors opened last spring.
“Buffalo has really embraced us,” said Lopez during a behind-the-scenes tour. “They are the nicest people. We’ve had a great time out here.”
Lopez’s film is part of a surge in production across Western New York. According to Buffalo Niagara Film Commissioner Tim Clark, this year alone has seen eight films go to camera in the region. “It’s the strongest that it’s ever been,” Clark said. “The forecast is bright because it’s going to be sunny all summer long with movies.”
The new film represents more than just a feel-good holiday story—it signals a pivotal moment for Buffalo’s emergence as a serious contender in the North American production landscape. COO of Great Point Studios, Peter von Gal, praised the city’s growing reputation. “We’re thrilled to see so much activity at our stages,” he said. “There’s no place better to create a holiday movie than the City of Buffalo. The local crew, with their talent and expertise, has been incredibly resourceful and has welcomed the production team with open arms.”
The holiday project caps off three weeks of production and momentum that is likely to carry into future productions. Lopez, who’s built a steady portfolio of television films, hinted at a return. “We’re excited about what’s happening here,” he said. “We definitely look forward to coming back.”
Buffalo’s investment in infrastructure, coupled with its local talent base and a film-friendly environment, is clearly paying off. For Great Point Studios, this marks the beginning of what could be a very busy—and very bright—era in the Western New York film scene.
