Austin Film Studio Could Open This Year, be Complete in 2025
A major Hollywood film company is one step closer to opening its highly-anticipated Central Texas studios. The massive film studio project in Bastrop County now has a new opening date set for late 2025, according to an update from the studio’s CEO.
Alton Butler, CEO and owner of Line 204, said the first phase of the studios could be ready before the end of 2024, but the full project located just east of Austin is expected to finish in late 2025, KXAN reports. The Bastrop 552 project was approved by City Council leaders in 2021 and was at that time planned to open in 2023, but construction was delayed for two years following tweaks and incentives to the studio and city’s initial agreement.
This huge 546-acre project is projected to have six studios, a three-story office building, mill house, a warehouse, and storage units. The first phase of the project expected to open this year will consist of six 20,000-square-foot studios, two 10,000-square-foot sound stages, a 50,000-square-foot warehouse with mill space and a 52,000-square-foot office space, according to the Austin Business Journal.
Bastrop 552 will be developed along the Colorado River as an all-in-one hub film hub in Central Texas. Butler said that the studio will be self-sustaining and have nearly everything needed for film production including grip and lighting equipment, truck rentals and a working ranch. Unlike other studios in the country, Butler explained that Bastrop 552 is a “film-play-stay” concept, which allows crews to come to the studios to work and then stay on-site.
Butler told ABJ that rising costs forced the company to slightly change its plans, but he’s excited for the redesign which is cleaner and cheaper.
In May 2023, the project secured unanimous approval for tweaks to the first 2021 development agreement which clarified parts of the document that pertained to timeline, infrastructure and potential reimbursement, according to City Council minutes. The Bastrop studio could generate $177.8 million per year, support 1,443 permanent jobs and $64.3 million in household earnings paid to workers over the decade after construction is completed, according to an analysis obtained by ABJ.
Another $267 million film studio development is planned for San Marcos that’s expected to break ground in 2023.
