The magic is back. Warner Bros. Discovery’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television series is set to start filming in summer 2025 at WB Leavesden Studios in London, marking the franchise’s biggest return since the original films wrapped over a decade ago.
While casting is still underway, the series is already assembling a top-tier creative team. Oscar-winning costume designer Holly Waddington (Poor Things) has joined the project, alongside Killing Eve writer Laura Neal, who has entered the writers’ room. Succession producer Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner, beating out several high-profile contenders for the role.
A Fresh Take on the Wizarding World
This decade-long TV adaptation will provide a deep dive into J.K. Rowling’s original seven books, promising a “faithful adaptation” that brings new details and richer storytelling to the screen. Unlike previous speculations, Fantastic Beasts will not be part of this universe—this reboot is solely focused on Harry Potter’s original story.
One major returning player is British VFX powerhouse Framestore, known for crafting the iconic visual effects of the original films. While no final contracts have been signed, Framestore is in prime position to handle the series’ expansive magical visuals.
Casting & Production Timeline
Warner Bros. is casting young actors for the lead roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, with a March 2025 casting call specifying ages between 9 and 11. With over 32,000 auditions submitted, the search for the next generation of Hogwarts students is already in full swing.
Meanwhile, Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) has signed on to direct multiple episodes and serve as executive producer, solidifying HBO’s commitment to prestige-level storytelling for the franchise.
