Brad Pitt’s upcoming Formula 1 film, F1, is the latest blockbuster to feature Abu Dhabi as a prime filming location. The highly anticipated Apple Original production, directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, shot key scenes during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit in December, marking another high-profile collaboration for the emirate.
The film, which stars Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, and others, chronicles Pitt’s character, former Formula 1 driver Sonny Hayes, as he mentors rookie teammate Joshua Pearce (Idris) on the fictional APXGP team. Filming in Abu Dhabi took place over 29 days, spread across three separate visits, with local production partner Epic Films providing support. The movie is set to hit theaters internationally on June 25, 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Abu Dhabi’s Growing Presence in Global Cinema
Abu Dhabi continues to establish itself as a go-to destination for international productions. “Our collective efforts and wise leadership continue to ensure exciting partnerships with leading production teams like Apple Original Films,” said Mohamed Dobay, acting director general of Abu Dhabi’s Creative Media Authority. The emirate’s film commission provided robust support, including a safe filming environment, an experienced talent pool, and financial incentives that make Abu Dhabi an increasingly attractive hub for filmmakers.
Sameer Al Jaberi, Head of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, highlighted the local impact of the F1 production: “284 local crew members worked on the film, alongside opportunities for Emirati talent, as part of our commitment to nurture creative industries from within.”
Enhanced Rebates and Hollywood Appeal
Abu Dhabi’s updated film rebate program, now offering up to 50% back on qualified below-the-line expenditures starting January, underscores its efforts to lure more big-budget productions. Over the past decade, Abu Dhabi has hosted major Hollywood projects such as Dune: Part Two, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Furious 7, and 6 Underground, as well as Bollywood hits like Vikram Vedha and Tiger Zinda Hai.
The emirate’s cinematic offerings extend beyond iconic desert landscapes to include cutting-edge infrastructure, experienced local crews, and seamless logistical support. With F1 adding to Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as a global film hub, the region is poised to play a bigger role in shaping the future of international filmmaking.
