Western Australia is stepping up its game in the global production race. Starting July 1, Screenwest will double its post-production, digital, and visual effects rebate to 20%—now the most generous post-production screen incentive in Australia. When combined with the federal government’s 30% offset, productions that spend at least $500,000 in Western Australia could now receive up to 50% back on qualifying post work done in the state.
The move comes as the state prepares to open the long-anticipated Perth Film Studios in Malaga next year. But while soundstages matter, industry leaders know that incentives are what drive decisions. “This is squarely aimed at encouraging more post-production projects to Western Australia,” said Screenwest CEO Rikki Lea Bestall. “We want to make sure our state is being considered for all facets of screen production.”
Western Australia has seen recent momentum, drawing productions like The Twelve Season 2 and Nicolas Cage’s The Surfer. In FY2023-24 alone, the local screen economy brought in nearly $65 million in production spend, up sharply from $41.5 million the year prior. Yet despite a steady pipeline of on-location filming, much of the post-production work was still going interstate or overseas.
That’s exactly what this new rebate aims to change. With international productions increasingly chasing incentive stacking across multiple territories, WA is now positioning itself not only as a location for principal photography—but as a serious player in the post game too. Expect to see more closing credits roll with the Screenwest logo—and more jobs flowing into WA’s post houses, animation shops, and VFX suites.
