New Budapest-adjacent facility blends Hollywood-grade LED volume with sustainable design and global ambitions
United Illusions Studio, Central Europe’s first ARRI-accredited virtual production stage, has officially launched just 20 minutes outside Budapest—positioning Hungary as a rising force in next-gen filmmaking. The studio’s LED volume is powered by ROE Visual’s Black Pearl BP2V2 panels, widely recognized as one of the gold standards in high-end virtual production, and marks a major leap forward for the region’s digital production capabilities.
Backed by the Visual Europe Group (VEG), United Illusions spans three fully equipped stages—including a 900-square-meter LED volume stage—and aims to serve everything from Hollywood features and global streaming series to experimental shorts and high-end commercials. The facility blends pixel-perfect digital backdrops with robust real-time workflows, using ARRI Alexa 35 cameras, Signature Zoom lenses, StYpe’s RedSpy 4.0 tracking, and a massive ARRI lighting package—all synchronized via GrandMA3.
“From day one, our mission was to develop a studio that sets a new benchmark for quality in virtual production,” said Zoltán Simon, Managing Director of United Illusions. “We chose ROE Visual because their products consistently deliver the performance and reliability needed for high-end cinematic production.”
The LED volume features a curved 28-meter by 6-meter main wall, a tiltable LED ceiling, and a modular 4×4 meter wild wall—all fully height-adjustable and expandable. With pixel counts topping 9,800 on the main wall alone, the setup meets the most demanding expectations of DPs and directors, offering superior color fidelity and flexibility on set.
The studio also earned ARRI Stage Accreditation—an elite designation awarded to just a few facilities globally—following extensive technical evaluations and crew training. “The Black Pearl 2V2 panels offer stunning visuals, high refresh rates, and incredible color accuracy,” said Olaf Sperwer, ROE Visual’s Business Development lead for Virtual Production. “It’s the kind of infrastructure that empowers filmmakers with true creative freedom.”
Beyond the tech, United Illusions is positioning itself as a center for sustainability and education. The studio runs entirely on 500 kW of solar energy, operates electric vehicles for transportation, and has been designed with energy efficiency in mind. It also plans to host VP-focused workshops in collaboration with one of Central Europe’s top universities.
With private skyboxes overlooking the stage, VIP lounges, and full production office support, United Illusions blends technical sophistication with hospitality—and with Hungary’s attractive tax rebates and proximity to Budapest International Airport, it’s primed to compete with the world’s top facilities.
“Virtual production is transforming the way stories are told,” Sperwer added. “And facilities like United Illusions are leading the charge, offering filmmakers an unprecedented blend of creative control, technical sophistication, and sustainable practice.”
