It’s been nearly 40 years since “This Is Spinal Tap” unleashed its indelible brand of bumbling metal mayhem on the world, but fear not, fans – a sequel is finally cranking the amps up to eleven and is now in production!
Director Rob Reiner is back at the helm, bringing his signature mockumentary style to bear on the feature currently shooting in New Orleans. The original’s iconic trio – Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer – reunite once more as the ever-beleaguered Spinal Tap, with Reiner himself reprising his role as documentarian Marty DiBergi.
The cameos are stacking up faster than Derek Smalls can misplace his Stonehenge set. Joining the previously announced rock royalty of Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Garth Brooks are the unexpected additions of Questlove and Trisha Yearwood. Reiner himself spilled the beans on the legendary trio during a November podcast interview.
“Marty DiBergi recently expressed his enthusiasm,” Reiner said in a statement, “to take a break from his duties as a visiting Professor’s Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again chronicle the saga of Spinal Tap. He feels it’s his duty to ensure their rightful place in the rock and roll pantheon.”
The plot, dreamt up by the original creative team of Guest, McKean, Reiner, and Shearer, finds Spinal Tap – England’s loudest and most punctual band – reuniting after a 15-year hiatus for a single, momentous concert.
Castle Rock Entertainment is financing the film, with Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George serving as producers. Christopher H. Warner and Derrick Rossi round out the team as executive producers.
“This Is Spinal Tap” holds a revered position in the comedy canon. A true cult classic that practically launched the mockumentary genre, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress in 2002, earning a coveted spot in the National Film Registry. Get ready for a whole new chapter in the Tap saga, folks – it’s sure to be a stone gas!
