Texas is riding a surge in film and television production, powered by homegrown talent Taylor Sheridan and a sweeping new state incentive program designed to keep projects rolling deep in the heart of the Lone Star State.

Since 2021, Sheridan has relocated much of his slate to Texas, filming series such as 1883, Lioness and Landman. This year, he and other producers have brought a steady stream of high-profile projects to the state — with even more on deck.

That momentum is set to accelerate with Senate Bill 22, which directs $300 million into the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Fund every two years through 2035. The legislation, which takes effect Sept. 1, positions Texas to compete head-to-head with juggernauts like California, Georgia and New Mexico. Sheridan is also doubling down with his own 450,000-square-foot Fort Worth studio campus, complete with soundstages and postproduction suites.

Currently Filming

The Chosen (Season 6)

The Biblical drama has been shooting in Midlothian this spring and summer, with production expected to wrap in September. Season six, covering the Crucifixion, will premiere theatrically with its finale on March 12, 2027.

The Dutton Ranch (Yellowstone Spinoff)

Starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, the Paramount+ drama has been filming across North Texas since mid-August. Annette Bening recently joined the cast. No release date has been set, though the spinoff is expected in 2026.

Brothers

The Matthew McConaughey–Woody Harrelson comedy for Apple TV+ began filming in Austin in May but paused in June following the exit of showrunner David West Read. Lee Eisenberg is in talks to take over. Inspired by the actors’ real-life friendship, the series follows the duo as their families attempt to live together on McConaughey’s ranch.

Eleven Days

Taylor Kitsch leads the Peter Landesman–directed hostage thriller alongside Diego Luna, Jason Isaacs and Rhea Seehorn. Production begins in September, dramatizing the 1974 Carrasco Prison Siege at Huntsville.

The Madison (Season 2)

Even before its first season airs, 101 Studios confirmed the Yellowstone-adjacent series will return, with cameras rolling in Fort Worth this September. Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams and Matthew Fox star.

Lioness (Season 3)

The Zoe Saldaña–led CIA thriller will return to Fort Worth in October after shooting season two in the region last year. Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Kelly co-star.

Wrapped Projects

Landman (Season 2)

Sheridan’s oil boom drama completed filming in August after months on location in Fort Worth and surrounding towns. The Paramount+ series premieres Nov. 16 with Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore and Sam Elliott leading the cast.

Family Movie

Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick and their children Sosie and Travis Bacon shot the indie horror film in Austin and Round Top in June. The Bacons also co-direct the project, about a filmmaking family caught in a real-life slasher scenario.

Atonement

Dallas hosted Reed Van Dyk’s drama about a Marine confronting the fallout of a 2003 Iraq War shooting. Boyd Holbrook, Kenneth Branagh and Hiam Abbass star. Filming took place at South Side Studios in June and July.

A New Era for Texas

With its expanded incentive fund, a wave of Sheridan-backed projects, and new infrastructure like the Fort Worth studio campus, Texas is positioning itself as one of the fastest-rising production hubs in North America.
