Shadowbox Studios has been tapped to operate and manage Kaufman Astoria Studios, the storied New York production facility whose credits span from Goodfellas, The Wiz and Sesame Street to Succession, And Just Like That and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

The transition takes effect immediately, with Shadowbox working alongside the existing on-site team at the Astoria, Queens campus. The facility, originally built in 1920 as the East Coast home of Paramount Pictures, includes 11 purpose-built soundstages and more than 325,000 square feet of office and production support space across a 500,000-square-foot campus.

The move comes after a turbulent stretch for Kaufman Astoria. In April, Deutsche Bank filed a foreclosure complaint against Kaufman Astoria Studios and then-owner Hackman Capital Partners, alleging default on a $340 million loan. A court-appointed receiver subsequently brought in Shadowbox to operate the studio.

Shadowbox, a global studio operations platform, said it will focus on maintaining Kaufman Astoria’s legacy as one of New York’s key production hubs while bringing its own operating standards to the lot.

“We want to welcome producers to this incredible studio to be enriched by its history and the storytellers that have come before them at the same time as offering a top-tier customer service to meet the demands of today’s production needs,” said Mike Mosallam, chief operating officer of Shadowbox Studios.

He added, “Our team is looking forward to working with the on-lot staff to thoughtfully integrate the Shadowbox Studios standards of excellence. Whatever the production, we will work in partnership to make it seamless.”

The assignment gives Shadowbox a major foothold in New York, one of the most competitive production markets in North America. The company already operates Shadowbox Atlanta, a nine-stage complex whose past productions include Jumanji and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as well as Shadowbox Shinfield in the U.K., an 18-stage, one million-square-foot facility that has hosted Star Wars: The Acolyte and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Shadowbox is also developing a 10-stage campus in Queensland, Australia, and operates Backlot Academy, an in-house workforce development program designed to train and grow crew bases in film and television production.

For Kaufman Astoria, the arrival of Shadowbox marks a new chapter for a studio campus that has been central to New York production for more than a century.
