Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) continues to position itself as a leader in cultivating industry-ready talent with the unveiling of the second phase of its state-of-the-art film studio backlot in Georgia. The 11-acre, multi-phase expansion now includes cutting-edge production facilities, an LED volume stage for virtual productions, advanced costume design labs, and a high-tech prop-making studio, creating a comprehensive ecosystem for aspiring filmmakers, designers, and production professionals.
The newly expanded facilities are designed to replicate professional studio environments, offering students hands-on experience with tools and technology they’ll encounter in the industry. SCAD president Paula Wallace emphasizes the significance of this development: “This costume-and-production expansion of the SCAD Backlot and Savannah Film Studios goes well beyond additional square footage, serving as a testament to SCAD’s commitment to cultivating industry-ready talent.” Highlights of the new facilities include a 3,700-square-foot space dedicated to costume design, featuring sewing labs, mentorship spaces, and specialized storage for costumes, props, and set materials, all tailored to enhance collaboration and creativity.
Originally opened in 2014 within a repurposed 22,000-square-foot former meatpacking plant, Savannah Film Studios has grown into a dynamic hub for innovation and learning. Wallace underscores its impact, stating, “This community of state-of-the-art facilities elevates production caliber and fosters a dynamic environment where collaboration thrives, ensuring SCAD students and alumni excel in every aspect of the industry.”
The expansion isn’t stopping here. Scheduled for completion in 2025-26, two industry-ready soundstages and 11 classrooms will further enhance SCAD’s offerings. Phase 3, set to open in 2026, will transform the backlot into a fully immersive production environment featuring a police station, a single-family home, and a town square, rounding out the 11-acre development.
With these additions, SCAD is creating a bridge between education and professional production, ensuring its graduates are prepared to excel in every corner of the industry, from costume design to virtual production and beyond.
