Ohio is continuing its push to cement itself as a Midwest production powerhouse. Fresh off the success of Superman which transformed Cleveland, Mentor and Cincinnati into Metropolis and grossed more than $581 million worldwide — the state has awarded $46 million in tax credits to 27 new projects.

The awards, announced this week by the Ohio Department of Development, cover 11 feature films, five TV series, four miniseries, four Broadway-style theatrical productions, two documentaries and one digital media project.

Leading the recipients is Spain Thief, a Cleveland-set feature that secured more than $10.5 million, the largest single allocation in this round. While details remain under wraps (and the title may be a placeholder), the budget is expected to reach $35 million.

Other notable projects include Ten Cent, which will dramatize the notorious 1974 “10-cent beer night” at Cleveland Municipal Stadium, receiving $3.6 million to shoot in North Canton, and The Guest List, an unscripted miniseries filming in Lorain with a $3 million award.

Professional wrestling also scored big: AEW and WWE collectively received over $3 million in credits for upcoming live events in Cleveland. On the stage side, Playhouse Square will host Broadway touring launches of The Notebook, Hell’s Kitchen and Spamalot, all backed by Ohio’s program.

Established in 2009, the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit reimburses productions for 30% of qualified in-state spending. The program caps at $50 million annually and awards are issued twice a year. The Greater Cleveland Film Commission estimates this latest round will generate $153 million in new production investment and over 1,000 crew jobs.

“These projects shine a spotlight on Ohio as a destination that attracts cutting-edge industries and jobs,” said Bill Garvey, president of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission. “Our track record of success continues, securing over $95 million in production investment and jobs for Northeast Ohio.”

In addition to the new slate, Hulu’s action-comedy Eenie Meanie, filmed in Cleveland, Sandusky and Toledo, premieres Aug. 22, further underscoring the state’s growing profile.
