Sydney’s screen sector is gearing up for a major expansion—and it’s not happening in the city’s glitzy east.
Plans for a $127 million film and television production complex in Oran Park, located in Sydney’s rapidly developing south-west, are now firmly in motion, with developers touting it as a long-overdue solution to the city’s studio space crunch. If approved, the facility could become the second major production hub in New South Wales, joining the fully booked Disney Studios Australia in Moore Park, which has long been the only game in town.
Backed by Greenfields Development Company—a group led by billionaire dairy entrepreneurs Tony and Ron Perich—the proposed Oran Park Studios project spans over 290,000 square feet across five stages. In addition to the soundstages, the site will feature full-scale production offices, workshops, and a multi-deck parking structure. Other infrastructure includes internal roadways, security checkpoints, and even a helipad, with plans for 24/7 operation and the capacity to host live audiences.
“This is about addressing a critical shortage of soundstage space in NSW and ensuring local productions aren’t squeezed out by major international shoots,” said NSW Minister for the Arts John Graham in a recent announcement. “There is big demand—and right now, Moore Park is often full.”
The Oran Park plan couldn’t come at a more pivotal time. As part of a broader $380 million funding package in the upcoming NSW state budget, the government has earmarked $100 million to explore the development of a second studio, including site selection and public-private partnerships. Oran Park, already zoned for industrial and employment uses, has emerged as a front-runner.
The studio’s architectural plans, designed by Nettletontribe Architects, reflect a focus on scalability and international appeal, with Greenfields stating that the goal is to attract both Hollywood productions and local Australian filmmakers. Stage one of the build, which includes a soundstage and core office facilities, is expected to cost $32 million and could accommodate large-scale features employing hundreds of crew members.
Sydney’s emergence as a global production destination—solidified by recent projects like Furiosa, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis—has intensified pressure on infrastructure, especially as streaming giants continue to ramp up international content. Oran Park Studios would help meet that demand while catalyzing job creation in Western Sydney’s growing creative economy.
The project also fits into a national trend of expanding screen infrastructure. In addition to Oran Park, new studios are underway in Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast, where Shadowbox Studios is planning a 10-soundstage facility in Yatala. Meanwhile, other NSW studio plans—such as the Lakeside Studio project in Penrith—have faced delays, leaving Oran Park increasingly positioned as the next major player.
For Greenfields, best known for turning rural farmland into large-scale residential developments, this pivot into entertainment is both strategic and symbolic. “It’s a landmark project,” said general manager Mick Owens. “One that will expand Sydney’s production capacity and help NSW remain a competitive destination for both international and local projects.”
Pending development approval from Camden Council, Oran Park Studios could break ground as early as 2026, reshaping not just the geography of Sydney’s production scene—but the balance of opportunity across the state.
