Mexico is fast becoming a top destination for global film and television productions, attracting filmmakers with its vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, and cost-effective production resources. With a growing reputation as a competitive production hub, Mexico offers a dynamic blend of talent, locations, and affordability that continues to draw major projects to the region.
Mexico already boasts an excellent existing production infrastructure, and in February 2019, Netflix announced that it had chosen Mexico as its Latin American production hub, in part due to the presence of state-of-the-art facilities throughout the country.
One of those studios is Estudios GGM, which opened in 2016. Holding a total of 9 soundstages, post-production services, and a skilled and trained crew, Estudios GGM is Mexico’s largest independent production facility and has served as host to projects from Netflix, Amazon, MGM, Telemundo, and Viacom, among others. Series that have been shot at Estudios GGM include Las Azules from Apple TV+, Enemigo Intimo, and Luis Miguel: The Series.
Maravilla Studios is the newest addition to Mexico’s production capabilities, having opened in 2023, brings an additional 50,000 square feet of space and 9 soundstages to the heart of Mexico City, adding further excitement and capacity to the local production community.
The production landscape is also further strengthened by established studios like Estudios Churubusco Azteca, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country since its opening in 1943. The studio features 9 soundstages, totaling 64,583 square feet, and is mostly known for their telenovela productions, a staple in Mexican culture. IP9 Studios is another standout in Mexico City with 7 soundstages comprising 55,915 square feet.
One of Mexico’s biggest draws is its affordability. Labor costs, equipment rentals, and production services are significantly lower compared to other international markets, enabling filmmakers to maximize their budgets without compromising on quality. This is especially appealing for productions looking to stretch their dollar while still delivering cinematic excellence. The country’s competitive pricing, paired with high-quality technical services, gives producers the financial flexibility to invest more in the creative aspects of their projects.
Mexico also offers a diverse array of locations that can double for countless parts of the world. Pristine beaches, lush jungles, and urban and rural areas are just some of the landscapes that Mexico has to offer. This versatility allows filmmakers to shoot various settings without leaving the country, saving both time and money. Whether you’re recreating the streets of a metropolitan area or capturing the isolation of a remote wilderness, Mexico’s landscapes provide unparalleled flexibility for a wide range of productions.
Mexico’s film and television industry is bolstered by a highly skilled and experienced workforce. From top-tier production crews to renowned actors and state-of-the-art special effects teams, Mexico offers the talent and technical expertise needed to support high-caliber productions. The country has proven time and again that it can handle large-scale projects with the professionalism and quality required by the global entertainment industry.
“In Mexico you find a great balance of high-level crew who are energized and excited to be a part of foreign projects,” said Concepcion ‘Conchita’ Taboada, Executive Producer of Spectrum Mexico. “They share the welcoming attitude and hospitality that Mexican culture is so famous for.”
Mexico’s rich cultural tapestry offers filmmakers unique opportunities to infuse their work with authentic, vibrant elements. The country’s rich history, colorful traditions, and lively arts scene—including music, dance, and festivals—bring an authentic edge to productions looking to tap into Mexico’s cultural depth. This wealth of creative inspiration has helped make Mexico a standout location for productions seeking both visual and narrative diversity.
From Spectre to the Fast & Furious franchise, Mexico has already proven itself as a capable and attractive destination for large-scale productions. Mexico is positioned to continue attracting filmmakers looking to combine cost savings with creative opportunity, and as Mexico’s film and television industry continues to grow and armed with a fleet of ready to film studios, the country is set to play an even larger role on the global stage, offering filmmakers the chance to create ambitious projects in a unique and supportive production environment.
