A Nod to Interstellar

The creative team went further, building an homage to McConaughey’s Oscar-nominated turn in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. Stray Vista’s designers recreated Cooper’s Farm, the iconic setting from the 2014 sci-fi classic. Combining practical elements with virtual extensions, the environment allowed McConaughey and Williamson to converse in a space that felt both familiar and cinematic.

“Chris had this idea that if we were going to celebrate Matthew’s journey, we had to reference Interstellar,” said Zack Stauffer, environment artist at Stray Vista. “We designed both the desert landscape and the farm in Unreal Engine, then merged them with physical builds for a hybrid that looked seamless on camera.”

Stray Vista’s Virtual Production Process

Stray Vista Studios, which operates its own in-house LED volume in Austin, handled both the virtual art direction and technical execution. Their VAD team (Virtual Art Department) designed the environments in Unreal Engine and optimized them for the stage. After a tech day preview, production went live with Stray Vista supervisors ensuring smooth integration of LED environments, practical builds and camera work.“The goal is always beautiful results, whether you’re blending real and virtual or leaning fully into one,” said Nate Strayer, owner of Stray Vista Studios.

The Conversation

While the visuals gave the episode a premium feel, the conversation delivered the substance. McConaughey reflected on his guiding philosophy that “life rhymes,” why courage is central to his choices, and how failure has shaped his career. He drew distinctions between “being” and “acting,” spoke on balancing self-confidence with humility, and teased his openness to returning to the True Detective franchise.

For Williamson, the 1,000th episode was about more than just a number. “It’s about honoring the journey — both mine and Matthew’s. We wanted to create something that felt worthy of the milestone.”

The result is a podcast episode that blurs the line between conversation and cinema, pushing the medium closer to a hybrid form of entertainment.
