Amazon In Talks To Sell MGM Alternative, Production Group Behind ‘The Voice’ & ‘Vanderpump Rules’
MGM Alternative may soon be under new ownership.
Stagerunner understands that the company is considering a sale of its unscripted production studio. The unit is behind shows such as NBC’s The Voice, CBS’ Survivor, ABC’s Shark Tank and Fox’s Beat Shazam and also incorporates two production companies — Evolution Media, which produces shows including Bravo’ hit reality hits Vanderpump Rules and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Big Fish Entertainment, the company behind Reelz’s On Patrol: Live.
Deadline understands that the tech giant has received a number of proposals from potential buyers. There was understood to be one inquiry toward the end of last year as well as a more recent approach, which has sparked renewed talks over a deal.
It’s not certain that Amazon would sell the division as a deal might not materialize. Insiders said that the division, which also is behind upcoming titles including Travis Kelce-fronted Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? and Wish List Games, hosted by Nick Cannon, is profitable.
Amazon closed its acquisition of MGM for $8.5B in 2022.
The unscripted division largely was built up by Mark Burnett, who left the company in November 2022. MGM acquired a 55% stake in Burnett’s companies One Three Media and LightWorkers Media in 2014 before buying the remaining 45% a year later and naming him President of MGM Television and Digital Group.
The unit, which now is part of Amazon MGM Studios, was placed under the leadership of Chris Brearton in November 2022, at the same time that Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke took control of the MGM studio. Brearton left in April, as revealed by Deadline, and the unscripted team, including Barry Poznik, now reports to Brad Beale, Head of Global Content Licensing and Distribution.
In July 2023, Deadline revealed that Lucilla D’Agostino is taking sole charge of MGM-owned production companies Evolution Media and Big Fish Entertainment, following the departure of Dan Cesareo. Cesareo founded Big Fish, which was also behind A&E’s Live PD and Food Network’s Amy Schumer Learns to Cook, in 2006 and sold it to MGM in June 2018.
MGM acquired Evolution Media, which was founded by Douglas Ross in 1987, in 2017. Its boss Alex Baskin left last year to set up his own production company 32 Flavors, but is still exec producing series such as Vanderpump Rules.
