Plans to build one of the largest film studios in Europe has been given the green light on Monday, paving the way for thousands of jobs across northeast England. The development, Crown Works Studios, is part of a continued push by the UK to expand its dominance as the leading production hubs for Hollywood Studios.
Sunderland City Council approved the $506 million studio project on Monday, calling it a “once-in-a-generation development.” The approval follows the recent government budget confirmation of a devolution package for the region, which could unlock up to $135 million for the site.
Planning firm Lichfields believes the studios will position the North East as a global hub for broadcast and film production.
Crown Works Studios is a joint venture between Cain International and Fulwell73, the production company owned by James Corden and behind shows like “The Kardashians,” “Friends: the Reunion,” and “Sunderland Til I Die.” The Labour-led Sunderland City Council is also a strategic partner.
Dramatic Transformation by 2027
Construction is expected to start later this year on the three-phase development, with completion set for 2027. The studio complex will include 19 sound stages, offices, workshops, a vendor village, and a backlot.
Lichfields estimates the project will create 8,450 jobs across the North East over the next decade.
Harvey Emms from Lichfields stated, “This is one of the most high-profile and exciting developments to come forward in the North East in recent years. It will establish the region as a major player in international broadcast and film production, creating thousands of jobs and driving economic prosperity. This project also brings the dramatic transformation of Sunderland’s Riverside a significant step closer.”
