In a significant move that signals both franchise revival and strategic IP play, Amazon MGM Studios has teamed up with Legendary Television to develop a live-action Pacific Rim series for Prime Video.
The project is now officially in development, with Eric Heisserer (Shadow and Bone, Arrival) attached as writer and executive producer under his Chronology banner. The show marks the first scripted project from Chronology’s newly minted first-look deal with Legendary Television.
While plot details remain under wraps, the series is confirmed to be a prequel to the original films. Industry sources also suggest the door remains open for future Pacific Rim films—a strong signal that Legendary is far from finished building out its transmedia footprint.
Originally launched in 2013 with Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, the franchise became a $400 million global box office hit and spawned sequels, anime spin-offs, and an extended publishing universe of comics and novels. Now, Amazon is looking to tap into that world-building potential as part of its broader effort to scale event television and deepen its genre slate.
The Pacific Rim deal lands as part of a flurry of development activity between Legendary and Amazon. The studios recently partnered with Pacesetter Productions to adapt the hit puzzle-book series Murdle and are already collaborating on the Monsterverse series Monarch for Apple TV+ and Dune: Prophecy for Max.
Heisserer brings serious genre credentials to the table. His credits include the Oscar-nominated Arrival, Netflix’s Bird Box, and genre mainstays like Lights Out, Bloodshot, and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). His involvement signals both narrative ambition and production firepower.
With IP-driven projects dominating the current development cycle, Pacific Rim joins a growing wave of franchise-backed series looking to extend the lifespan—and revenue potential—of legacy brands. For Prime Video, it’s another shot across the bow in the ongoing battle to own genre storytelling in the streaming era.
Stay tuned: the Jaegers are just getting started.
