Long hailed as “Hollywood East” for its rich filmmaking history, North Carolina is proving it still has the star power to rival Tinseltown. On November 14, Dark Horse Stages unveiled two brand-new purpose-built soundstages in a grand opening event worthy of a blockbuster premiere, attended by over 550 industry leaders, local officials, and film professionals.
The expansion introduces 40,000 square feet of state-of-the-art production space, boosting the Wilmington-based studio’s total stage capacity to an impressive 82,500 square feet across four soundstages. Including production offices, workshops, and storage facilities, the studio now encompasses a total footprint of 123,000 square feet, further cementing its status as a premier destination for filmmakers.

The grand opening was a night of spectacle and celebration, showcasing Wilmington’s integral role in North Carolina’s film industry. Guests were treated to a dazzling evening featuring live music, cinematic theatrics, and even a surprise performance by legendary Twisted Sister frontman—and proud North Carolina resident—Dee Snider. Snider thrilled the crowd with an electrifying rendition of “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and announced plans to bring his production company, Defiant Artists, to the state.

The evening’s most dramatic moment came when Dark Horse CEO Kirk Englebright rappelled from the ceiling to the iconic Indiana Jones theme, earning thunderous applause. Speaking to the crowd, Englebright emphasized Dark Horse Stages’ commitment to elevating the state’s film industry.
“We are committed to providing world-class facilities that enable creators to realize their visions,” said Englebright. “The excitement surrounding our expansion reflects the bright future of film in North Carolina.”

The timing of Dark Horse Stages’ expansion is intriguing, coming during an industry-wide slowdown that has left many markets uncertain. Yet, optimism is building in North Carolina, especially with Louisiana’s proposed elimination of its tax credit program creating new opportunities. North Carolina’s competitive 25% rebate incentive positions the state as a beacon for productions seeking cost-effective, high-quality facilities. Already a thriving film hub, Wilmington—with its rich history dating back to the 1980s—is seizing this moment to strengthen its reputation as Hollywood East, setting the stage for a promising new chapter in the state’s film legacy.
Governor Roy Cooper and Governor-Elect Josh Stein also shared their enthusiasm for the expansion, praising Dark Horse Stages for its contribution to the state’s economy and creative landscape.
In addition to bolstering the region’s production capabilities, Dark Horse Stages is fostering the next generation of filmmakers. The studio has partnered with the Film Partnership of North Carolina to provide internships and hands-on experiences for aspiring creatives. This collaboration underscores Dark Horse’s commitment to nurturing talent and solidifying Wilmington’s reputation as a cornerstone of the entertainment industry.
“Dark Horse’s presence and our partnership provide a bedrock foundation for North Carolina’s flourishing film economy,” said Susi Hamilton, CEO of the Film Partnership of North Carolina. “We look forward to its continued success.”
As North Carolina positions itself to attract more productions, Dark Horse Stages stands as a shining example of the state’s dedication to growth, innovation, and the arts. This expansion not only reinforces Wilmington’s status as a key player in the global film industry but also sets the stage for even bigger productions and opportunities ahead.
